Who Is Lewis Tipton Stringer Huntley?

Lewis Tipton Stringer was born in Evanston, Illinois on July 15, 1930. She is the daughter of Lewis “Louie” Frances Stringer and Arthur Campbell.

According to reports, Lewis’ name came from her maternal grandmother, Sarah Lewis Tipton. 

Lewis Tipton was just an average person. However, she came into the spotlight after she married a popular American TV newscaster, Chet Huntley. 

Unfortunately, their marriage did not last long and they divorce. Lewis got married again to William Conrad, an American director, producer, and actor.

Personal Life

Lewis Tipton Stringer Huntley was one of the first women to appear on a large-market news broadcast. She gained a lot of fans after becoming a weather reporter for WRC-TV. 

Because of her sophisticated intelligence and good looks, she quickly captured the attention of many people. She also appeared in several magazines, such as Life Magazine.

Before she became WRC-TV station’s resident weather girl, Lewis hosted weather shows, homemaking, and cooking for the TV station. 

Lewis would present the weather on an afternoon show called “Afternoon”. It’s a TV show hosted by Willard Scott and features the early Muppets of Jim Henson.

Meeting Chet Huntley

In 1957, Lewis met Chet Huntley due to her work in the TV industry. It was also the time when the Huntley-Brinkley Report was becoming the nightly news program of NBC.

Lewis was introduced to Huntley by Brinkley through satellite. Huntley virtually courted Lewis for a couple of months. In 1959, the two got married. 

Lewis kept on working in TV, radio, and advertising for the first years of her marriage to Huntley. Unfortunately, she had to leave her career due to the demands of being a wife of a busy broadcaster.

In 1974, Huntley passed away. His death encouraged Lewis to go on the lecture circuit to draw attention to the psychological and emotional hardships of becoming a widow. 

Meeting William Conrad

Lewis met William Conrad in 1980. He is an actor and the original voice of Marshall Matt Dillon. They also got married in the same year. 

William Conrad was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 27, 1920. Conrad served as a fighter pilot in World War II. 

During his radio career, William Conrad estimated that he played around 7,500 roles or more. He was also frequently cast as a threatening figure as an actor in feature films. 

In the later years of his career, Lewis went on to help manage Conrad. Unfortunately, Conrad passed away in 1994 due to a heart attack in Los Angeles. 

Later Life

Lewis founded the Stringer Foundation in 1995. This foundation has funded reproductive education, women’s shelter, animal protection groups, literacy groups, and public broadcasting.

The creative mind and taste of Lewis helped her create a career in the booming TV broadcasting industry. She made a career in an industry where opportunities for women were extremely limited.

Lewis helped pave the way for millions of young ladies to enjoy a more open field for their notable careers.
