Generations Of Beauty: 20th To 21st Century

Generations Of Beauty

When we talk about beauty influence, two things come to our mind; fashion and make-up. For centuries, these two have always left a mark on beauty history. In today’s generation, fashion and make-up influence can be visibly seen and noticed easily. People are quick to come up with new trends, and most of us are quick to follow what’s new.

Makeup serves as something that helps enlighten our features, but many use it to show creativity and art. Like famous artists like Da Vinci or Van Gogh, many make-up artists or influencers are also known for their work. Using their faces as a canvas, you can go from full glam to transforming yourself into gore-filled creatures like zombies. Some even use their creativity to look like a certain famous person. But doing make-up doesn’t really require you to have the skills of a pro. You can do simple looks or follow tutorials on the internet. But for some who are really serious in this field, you can pursue your dreams by studying in a beauty school in Houston, New York, Minnesota, or anywhere near where you live or the place you aspire to be. Many offer cosmetology courses as many are actually interested!

The same with the fashion industry. Many big brands, such as Christian Dior, Saint Laurent, and Chanel, have such an influence in the beauty world. With designers that are creating such wonderful pieces for famous ambassadors that are mostly celebrities or businessmen, many want to study in the fashion industry too. Either become a designer or a model. Places that have schools offering these programs are mostly known to be in New York or France.

But let’s go back in time and talk about the influence of beauty on each decade from the 1900’s up to now while discussing the trends during each period of time.

Early 1900’s to 1940s

During the early 1900s, make-up was aimed at looking youthful and natural. Overdone make-up was reserved for women on stage or prostitutes during that time. Ladies were expected to be conservative, so being seen with make-up was pointed out as a bold move. Fashion for women was dominated by the S-shaped “health” corset. Attempting to avoid abdominal pressure by pushing out the bust and hips. With day dresses that covered the body from the neck to the floor and long sleeves that covered the arms, modesty was emphasized.

With the world war happening during the 1910s, fashion during the time period was more likely divided in two. Before the war and after the war. Well, changes in women fashion mostly manifested during the 1920s due to the attributes contributed by the war, popular styles in the twenties are actually evolved styles before the war. This understatement gave rise to the decade-long trend of the tubular “la garçonne” look.

Women’s fashion in the early 1930s gradually transitioned from the boyish appearance of the previous decade to the feminine silhouette. By the end of the 1930s, world war II started and profound impact on the first half of the 1940s. Even after the war, its influence is still visible. This is where Christian Dior entered the picture. In the same decade, Hollywood celebrities had a big impact on fashion. The ’30s were known for their pencil-thin eyebrows, and some women would completely pluck them off before drawing them back on each morning. In the 1940s, hairstyles included updos, redder-than-red nails and lipstick, and brows that were strongly arched.

The ‘60s to ‘80s

The “London Look” was popularized during the 60s leaving a huge influence in Hollywood. Actresses like Audrey Hepburn started experimenting with heavy false lashes and paler lip color. A fresh and athletic look also starts to come during the 70s. Aiming to look like that fresh everyday life is shown in movies. During the 80s, experimentation with make-up went on. Full brows were a trend set after The Blue Lagoon.

The 1990s and 2000s

Grunge trends but also girlier looks came into the picture. People started using black eyeliners and glitters and lip gloss. Actresses also took a big risk in make-up for roles wearing prosthetics, heavy make-up, or no make-up at all. Jeans dominated the fashion trends. It was a big movement that was even worn on red carpets. Low-rise and flared style jeans were prevalent by the mid-2000s.

From the 2010s to the present day

With the rapid development of technology and everything slowly turning high-tech, 4k cameras are now industry standard so make-up artists now have to put a lighter hand. Make-up also started to expand to all genders. Anything goes just like what we see on runways or in real life.
